Just as Johannes Gutenberg’s movable-type printing press impacted the global spread of knowledge, the Internet is uniquely positioned to move beyond distribution but rather contribution and collaboration from all levels of society. However, so many of today’s technology use seems to merely digitize existing classroom practices rather than facilitate transformative ones. To move beyond digitized worksheets and $1,000 pencils, schools need to adopt a change process theory model by treating the pedagogical shift to fully leverage a 1:1 environment to empower the learner as an “epidemic” as described by Malcolm Gladwell in his book The Tipping Point.

However achieving this shift is not easy as illustrated by the recent troubled implementations in Los Angeles and Miami. We believe that we must grow slow with successful opt-in teachers interested to build momentum and create an “epidemic” to facilitate the spread of ideas and behavior in schools. Over the course of two years, we implemented a 1:1 learning environment with Chromebooks in a large, urban school district. Learn how we approached and embraced change, what choices we made, successes and challenges, staffing requirements, curricular modifications, pedagogical shifts, technical hurdles from deploying 4,800 Chromebooks in grades 7-12.
